OCAD U Typography

Hello :)
My name is Maria Vassiliou.
This is my blog for my Typography course at OCAD U.
I hope you all enjoy it :)
I incorporated music, into this piece.
As the music note goes down the page, and along the bottom of it, I the colours transition from red to purple, showing my emotions along the journey. At first it is red to show my displeasure with the TTC, mainly the 104 bus. As it goes towards the purple it shows my satisfaction and openness to talk to people and be less agitated as I continue on with my train ride. The music was used to show the type of music I listen to as the journey starts and finishes. It starts off with some classic Eminem, since his music can always calm me down, and turns into Lady Gaga, and then Kanye West.

‘Depressed’ by Jan Zuppinger.

Jagged tree limbs vaguely make out the word ‘depressed’.The font was created using natural resources and really represents what that word means in my opinion. Dark, misunderstood, and edgy.

Let Your Glory Fall (by nicole.harsono) | Another collab with Brittney! :)

I kinda like the layout of these words, but the spacing is a bit annoying. Some of the letters don’t line up with the other letters, and my OCD is kicking in and makes me want to space out the letters so they line up appropriately. The font is simple and white. Very eye appealing, along with the background being very appropriate with the quote.

HIP HOP

I want this as a poster in my room. I just love how the creator incorporated both ‘hip’ and ‘hop’ into the same word. The font for the word ‘hop’ is a solid Sans Serif font, while the font INSIDE the ‘hop’ is a Serif style. I know this probably wasn’t the artists intention, but for me at least, i feel like this shows that you can’t just look at the surface of the culture of hip hop. If you do, all you’ll see is the typical rappers rapping about drugs, sex, gangs, ect and you wont see the other side that actually has meaning and thought behind it. I’ve had to deal with defending rap on so many levels that’s its unbelievable, and I really really love this image.

I feel like this is a poster directed towards censorship and how it even exists between common citizens, not just in the media. The font is really simple and seems to imitate that of someones writing. The imagery used is priceless and I think fits perfectly with what the creator was trying to explain and depict.

Love the quote. The fact that the creator pushed and squished the necessary words into a little area really emphasizes the speakers point that’s trying to be made. Which is that there are so many things that have been caused by religion, that people dismiss immediately.

The font seems to be originally a Sans Serif font type, but the creator has added more characters, strokes and designs to a few individual letters. The font ended up matching up the quote being used. The colours are great, it really adds diversity and an interesting feel to the overall poster.

I like the colour combination in this piece. They work well together. I like how the creator used the same 4 words, but just in different order to create a new saying. I also really like how he re-sized the words to fit their meaning. The font is really clear and simple, and is a combination of Serif and Sans Serif fonts.

CritiqueThe font is bold, strong. When you think of the past, it’s supposed to be done, and nothing that you can do about it, which I feel like this font represents. The tearing of this paper, I feel adds to the representation that the past is something that you can’t always fix, and will somehow be broken.

This is just hectic. The detail done, by just using font is just unbelievable. though I’m not a fan of Lil Wayne, I think this is brilliant. From the shading, to the little details done on his ears and glasses. The font isn’t legible, but from what I can make out, they’re lyrics from a variety of his songs. I really hate the font used. But for this, I love that the background is black with white text on it.

CritiqueThe caffeine drinker in me loves this. The font is simple and playful, nothing too over the top. Kind of reminds me of children’s font types. It kind of gives everyone the a-okay to drink an addictive substance, and rationalizes the reason for it.

The font itself is hard to make out, but its a clever idea. The creator used images of books to spell out the word ‘book’ itself. It’s clever, but I’m not a fan of its appearance, nor of the colours chosen.
